As a mathematics education consultant, he regularly worked with students and teachers at the K to 8 level. John was the author of the best-selling Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally. He was also the elementary mathematics advisor to the Addison Wesley Math Makes Sense K-8 textbook program. He was well-known for his speaking engagements and workshops, which focus on teaching mathematics via problem solving within a student-centered approach.
